Here is some background information about me.

After having finished my abitur (German equivalent to A-levels), I did a 15-month community service, the  German alternative to the obligatory military service.

I studied Mathematics at the Hochschule für Technik in Stuttgart Germany. During my studies I spent six month studying in France (at the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne in Brest) and six month doing an industrial placement in Wales (in a company called Sandco Ltd.). I quite liked Wales and so I decided to complete my studies doing a final year in Wales at the University of Glamorgan. Hence, I possess two degrees: the German Diplom-Mathematiker (FH) and the British B.Sc. (Hons).

After finishing my degree, I decided to continue my studies by pursuing a PhD in the field of data-mining and bioinformatics (or computational Biology) at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth in Prof. R.D. King's group. After submitting my PhD thesis in 2001, I continued for another year as a research assistant and finally decided to return to Germany.

There, I spent a year as professional consultant at the struktur AG in Stuttgart. Although having an interesting position, I decided to go back into research and started as a research assistant in the Albert-Ludwigs Universität, Freiburg in Prof. L. De Raedt's group. Currently I am holding a position as under the supervision of Prof. W. Burgard in the same institute.
